Perception, Quality, Or Ability Of Someone Or Something

An assessment is defined as the evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of someone or something (Merriam Webster). This definition is nonspecific because of the vast quantity of assessments available. One may go to the doctor and have a medical assessment and then at school have another assessment. Each of these assessments will be different from the other and yet they serve the same purpose-to measure. Assessments differ in what they measure and how they measure which is why there are so many different kinds. To clarify, you would not go to the doctor and have a multiplication quiz and you would not go to school and have your temperature checked. Personality has its own selection of assessments, which, even within the same field of study, are not all useful for measuring the same thing. The California Q- set is one example of a personality assessment; it is used to characterize people and identify multiple personality traits in a person. Although there are sever al other kinds of personality assessments the California Q-set provides a subjective assessment of someone’s personality. The ultimate goal of the California Q-set is to look at many traits at once. It consists of 100 phrases on cards that describe an aspect of personality important for characterizing a particular individual (Funder 2016). Items will usually be something along the lines of: â€Å"Is critical, skeptical, not easily impressed†(Block, 1961).
